They say every journey begins with the first step forward - but sometimes our first real step is a turnaround. Today, we could say that we find ourselves at a crossroads. For years we have heeded the calls from our political leaders - charge ahead, fight harder, speak louder. Perhaps now we should consider that is not even the road we needed to be on.

We the people live to experience the best that comes from our pursuits, whether it be with family, friends, or communities we choose. As such, we have a consequential role in our government by doing everyday things like going to work, maintaining our households, and yes, even praying. The most consequential role we play is electing those who aim to solve, not create, problems in our different levels of government.

We have done our part. Now, we must demand to be heard—and give our attention to those who truly listen, who acknowledge our deepest concerns about our cities, our state, and our country. Our governments at all levels are as interdependent as we are in our communities. In fact, American greatness begins in our homes, the landscapes we live in. We know this. Our elected leaders know this. We can't ignore it. They do.

Now, it seems that limiting our choices at the ballot box with only those with more money, position, and political influence has not been working for us. These choices have not delivered leaders that will look us in the eye with the truth about the consequences of their limited leadership. Instead of standing up for Texans they stand by for orders - orders from the White House on how to keep us in line.

Well. If you've had enough of waiting for our Texas leaders to get their orders from Washington, then join me. Because the road to a better Texas does not begin in Washington. It begins wherever you're standing. In Texas. It begins now - and it begins with us.
